EvidenceGrid

A systematic review extraction template that keeps sources visible.

Capture design, population, intervention, outcomes, limitations, exact quotes, pages, and review status in one structured CSV.

A practical starting structure.

The template separates bibliographic data, eligibility context, study characteristics, outcomes, and the source text supporting each extracted result.

What the template captures.

Citation and eligibility

Identify the study and preserve why it entered the extraction set.

  • Study ID
  • Title
  • Authors
  • Year
  • DOI
  • Inclusion reason

Population and intervention

Capture the comparison structure needed for synthesis.

  • Population
  • Sample size
  • Intervention
  • Comparator
  • Setting
  • Follow-up

Methods and outcomes

Record how the study was run and what it measured.

  • Study design
  • Outcome
  • Effect measure
  • Result
  • Limitation

Audit trail

Keep the original source available for independent checking.

  • Exact quote
  • PDF page
  • Match status
  • Reviewer note

Extract only after the review scope is stable.

A fixed question and field definition reduce inconsistent interpretation across papers.

  1. Lock the extraction schema

Define every field, acceptable evidence, and missing-data rule before processing the included studies.

  2. Populate comparable values

Use one row per study and apply the same extraction instruction to every paper in the set.

  3. Audit quotes and pages

Review uncertain fields, correct page references, and retain the supporting passage before synthesis.

Review the extraction before asking AI for themes.

EvidenceGrid generates cross-paper themes, agreements, disagreements, limitations, and gaps from reviewed cells while keeping supporting quotes available.

This template covers data extraction.

It does not conduct database searches, duplicate screening, PRISMA reporting, or formal risk-of-bias scoring. Use the template once your included study set is ready.

Common questions.

Is this limited to clinical reviews?

No. The default columns include PICO-style fields, but they can be replaced with qualitative, educational, social science, or mixed-methods fields.

Can two reviewers use the same template?

Yes. Add reviewer and adjudication columns when independent extraction or conflict resolution is part of the protocol.

Does EvidenceGrid perform risk-of-bias assessment?

No. You can create fields for reviewer notes, but formal instrument scoring should remain in the review tool and protocol chosen by your team.
